I have been a Ranger since 1989. I was born in Jomba in about 1960. When I was 20 years old I left my family to get married to Nyirakamana. After that, life became increasingly difficult and I decided to find work. I became a Ranger a year after getting married.
I started in the Gorilla Sector in Jomba: two years later I was in change of Rumangabo Station! Living away from my small family was hard. I had to knuckle down and show some character in order to make the whole thing work.
This work shows you Nature in all its beauty and all its ugliness. Our mission is paramount: to protect nature, and so we take everything that’s thrown at us. The Mountain Gorilla is my favourite animal. They are soft and gentle and, over the years I have spent with them, have become like my brothers.
All we want is for our children to inherit this, and to be proud of it. We don’t want them to read in a book: ‘Once there was a park in Virunga.’ That’s my motivation.
